Last Saturday The National Farmers' Union organised a National Day of Unity to protest the government's introduction of the Family Farm Tax.
Richard Fuller MP said:
It was good to catch up with a number of local farmers on Saturday morning. The farmers congregated at Brewpoint before travelling through the town to a number of supermarkets.
Numbers were deliberately restricted to ensure that whilst thanking the public for their support, minimum disruption was caused to people in and around the town.
The Family Farm Tax, which introduces an inheritance tax liability on any farm valued at over £1 million, risks seeing farms that have been in families for generations having to be sold off to pay death duties. Not only does this fail to recognise that many farms are asset rich but cash poor, it also represents a severe risk to our future food security as land is necessarily sold off and taken out of food production.
