On Wednesday, Richard attended a debate in Westminster Hall on The Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme (LPGWS). The scheme gives grants covering the VAT on repairs of over £1,000 to listed buildings used as places of worship.
Richard Fuller MP said:
The scheme was only funded until 31 March 2025 and regrettably, the Chancellor omitted mentioning the LPWGS from the Autumn Budget causing concern amongst places of worship - including many in North Bedfordshire - who have used the scheme and consider it a lifeline as it is often the key to unlocking much-needed maintenance and repairs in the form of heating, lighting and electrics.
I must say I don’t think I have been to a Westminster Hall debate where so many MPs stood up to make a contribution showing the extent of cross-party support.
I was pleased to hear the Minister, Chris Bryant, announce at the end of the debate that the scheme will continue in 2025-26 with a reduced budget of £23 million although a cap has been introduced on the total amount that a listed place of worship can claim per year at £25,000, which can be spread across multiple claims from the same church.
